Narayana Gurukula, often referred to simply as Gurukula or the Gurukula Foundation, is a cherished institution rooted in India’s ancient traditions. The Gurukula is dedicated to the teachings of Guru Narayana of South India (1854-1928). He imparted contemplative wisdom through Advaita Vedanta (a non-dual philosophy) and Brahmavidya (the Science of the Absolute), also known as Atmavidya (Self-knowledge). Guru Narayana’s teachings resonate with the Upanishads and the philosophies of Sankaracharya, offering a modern interpretation of these timeless principles. Unlike typical organizations, the Foundation operates similarly to specialized ancient Indian institutions.

Established by Guru Narayana’s direct disciple, Guru Nataraja (also known as Dr. Natarajan), the Gurukula continues the lineage of the original Guru. In 1926, Guru Nataraja took on the role of a sannyasin (a life of renunciation) by donning the yellow cloth, symbolizing his commitment. Since then, he has lived a life of celibacy and dedication at the Gurukula, focusing entirely on spreading Guru Narayana’s teachings.

The Gurukula Foundation functions as a charitable and public organization under the guidance of the current Guru. In India, it is known as a Dharmasthapana, dedicated to advancing righteous living. The Foundation’s resources support religious, educational, and charitable activities aimed at enhancing the spiritual, moral, and physical well-being of its community. Leaders and primary disciples live simply and uphold high moral standards, ensuring that the Foundation remains focused on its mission without seeking profits.
