Arddhanarishvarasthavam

by Narayana Guru

Summary

This apparently satiric work in Malayalam was chanted on the spot by Guru at Aruvippuraṁ around 1894 when the local people approached for solace in their suffering on account of severe drought. Guru, on hearing the complaint, sat meditating for a while, and then chanted these verses. Within two hours there was a heavy downpour even flooding the nearby river, Neyyār. This composition is in the Śārddūlavikrīḍitaṃ metre.

പെയ്യാ‍റാകണമേ ഘനാംബു കൃപയാ
ഗംഗാനദീധാമമേ!

Meaning
What a pity!
Every being under this scorching sun
Is melting off and wilting down,
Simply because you remain absent.
On looking around for a helping hand,
Who else is to be seen gracious enough!
Before the total collapse of these
Hungry and thirsty beings
Into this blazing big fire,
Please pour down rain heavily
Across the entire earth
With all your kindness,
O the abode of the river Gaṅga!
